Is Chocolate Really Toxic to Dogs? You keep hearing about it, but many owners just don't want to believe it. But even if we humans enjoy sweet treats so much: the alkaloid theobromine contained in the cocoa of chocolate triggers processes in the body of the four-legged friends that can become life-threatening.

What makes chocolate poisonous for four-legged friends?

Chocolate is poisonous for dogs because a substance contained in it completely disrupts the four-legged friend's central nervous system. Theobromine is contained in cocoa beans, from which chocolate is made. When snacking, this substance gets into the blood of the dog's intestine and from there into the liver. It starts metabolic processes that are devastating for the dog. Theobromine inhibits adenosine receptors and phosphodiesterase. The result: stress hormones are increasingly released. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning in dogs include diarrhea and vomiting. In addition to theobromine, chocolate also contains caffeine, which is also toxic to dogs.

Dark chocolate is particularly toxic to dogs

Not only is chocolate poisonous for dogs, it also takes an exceptionally long time for the four-legged friends to break down the dangerous substance theobromine again. Dogs with chocolate poisoning suffer from cramps and are restless. Even with small amounts of theobromine, your body reacts clearly. The amount of chocolate that is toxic to dogs depends on how big and heavy the four-legged friends are. If your dog has nibbled on the candy, you should see a veterinarian as soon as possible to treat chocolate poisoning in the dog.

In addition, each type of chocolate contains a different amount of cocoa. The more it is, the more chocolate is poisonous to dogs. Of course, dark or dark chocolate is particularly dangerous for your four-legged friend. It contains most cocoa and therefore the highest theobromine concentration. No cocoa is used to make white chocolate. That is why it does not contain theobromine. Nevertheless: Treat your darling to something good by giving him a treat for dogs. And if it should be something sweet, then try it with special dog chocolate.
